Aspen is known for its stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or simply looking to explore the charming town, here’s a list of scenic drives and sightseeing ideas.  Please check availability and potential seasonal closure of these roads ahead of time.  If you’re driving in Winter, you may need snow chains or all-wheel drive.

Scenic Drives

1. Independence Pass:  Take Highway 82 over Independence Pass, one of the highest paved mountain passes in North America. The drive offers breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains and opportunities for hiking and photography. Please take note that this pass opens in late May/early June each year and closes for a roughly 6-month period beginning in early winter when steady snow begins to fall.

2. Maroon Bells:  Drive to Maroon Lake and the adjacent Maroon Bells, two of the most iconic natural landmarks in the country. A little known fact is that Maroon Bells is the most photographed landscape in the United States. This site offers spectacular mountain views, especially in the fall when the aspen trees turn golden.

3. Castle Creek Road:  This picturesque drive takes you through the scenic Castle Creek Valley, with views of lush meadows, historic cabins, and the stunning Elk Mountains.

4. Ashcroft Ghost Town:  Head to Ashcroft Ghost Town, a preserved mining town just 12 miles from Aspen. Explore the well-preserved buildings and learn about the area’s mining history.

5. Woody Creek Road:  Drive along Woody Creek Road to explore the tranquil and charming Woody Creek community. Stop by the Woody Creek Tavern for a taste of local flavor.

1. Maroon Lake and Maroon Bells:  Hike around Maroon Lake and capture stunning reflections of Maroon Bells in the water. It’s a fantastic spot for photography and picnicking.
